Natural
conditions The
Mrągowo Lake District is one of three lake districts situated in
the area of Olsztyn province.
Its landscape was shaped as a result of the last glaciation and
is diversified by tunnel-valley lakes and numerous end moraines
the highest of which exceed 200 m above sea level. The biggest lakes
of the area are: Czos, Juno, Juksty, Salęt and Wągiel. The Krutynia
river, constituting one of the most picturesque canoeing routes
in Europe, is the most important river of Mrągowo surroundings.
In numerous ground depresions there are marshy grounds and swamps
which favours the development of aboundant vegetation and animal
life. The southeastern part of the community Mrągowo forms a part
of the Mazurian Landscape Park encompassing areas of the greatest
natural and sight-seeing qualities of the Great Mazury Lakes. In
the area of the local Forest Inspectorate there are forest nature
reserves "Bukowo" and "Dębowo" consisting of
over 140 years old beech tree stands, the animal reserve "Piłaki"
and the peat bog reserve "Gązwa".
Location
Mrągowo
(farmerly Ządźbork or Sensburg) with the population of about 23000
is the capital of the Mrągowo Lake District. It is situated between
lakes Czos and Juno. Transport routes to Giżycko, Olsztyn and Ełk
cross here.
It is situated within a distance of about 90 km from the Polish
border with Kaliningrad District and the border crossing in Bezledy.
The Airport Szczytno-Szymany is situated about 50 km from Mrągowo.
The town has convenient bus links with surrounding towns and villages
as well as with Olsztyn and Warsaw.
The railway line Olsztyn-Ełk also crosses the town. Two field landing
grounds existing nearby the town may be used in season for tourist
passenger flights.
Turist
advantages
The attractive
locatin of the town among lakes and forests of the Mrągowo Lake
District and a number of tourist attractions make Mrągowo the summer
capital of the region. Amateurs of active rest are offered: canoeing
floats down the river, foot, cycling and coach trips, horse riding
and clean beaches on lakes. In the town numerous interesting routes
of foot, cycling and water trips start, e.g. to Kętrzyn, Sorkwity,
Reszel, Święta Lipka and the route Great Mazury lakes. The existing
cultural offer is aimed mainly at tourists.
The international Festival of Country Music popularly called ,,the
Country Picnic" and the Festival of Polish Borderland Culture
are the most generally known events cyclically taking place in the
town. The town also organises the Mrągowo Days of Culture and a
number of other events.
Economy
During the recent years, a number of important ecology oriented
projects have been completed in Mrągowo, including e.g. the new
sanitary landfill and the municipal sewage treatment plant. There
are more than 1500 business entities operating in the town, the
largest of which are : District Dairy Cooperative, MM International
Furniture Factory, "Warmia" Clothing Manufacturing Company".
Dominating economic sectors are: tourism, food industry (milk processing),
wood industry (furniture making), clothing industry.
Preferable
investment from the outside:
- construction
of a winter-sports centre on the slopes of Góra Czterech Wiatrów
(downhill skiing tracks, lifts, snow-making equipment, backup facilities),
- construction of hotels and guesthouses,
- waste management.
A 1999 analysis by the Institute of Research on Market Economy
named Mrągowo as the only leader among the towns inhabited by 15000-40000
and located in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Province.
